The 20-year-old college student, who is the daughter of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, also reveals how she maintains her privacy.
Apple Martin, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, is opening up about growing up in the public eye in a new interview.
Martin, now a 20-year-old student at Vanderbilt University, has popped up in headlines over the years. In December, she made her societal debut at Le Bal des Débutantes in Paris, France, with her parents in attendance to support her.
But, the college junior mostly keeps her life private, even making her Instagram available to only her friends and family.
She reflected on the importance of privacy while being raised by two famous parents in a recent chat with Interview magazine, where she interned two years ago. For the interview, Martin spoke with Interview editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg.
During their talk, Ottenberg pointed out that although news about Martin’s societal debut circulated, she mostly keeps an air of “mystery.”
“It’s interesting because I grew up with that uneven balance of getting out of the airport with my mom and being bombarded with cameras, and then just being a normal kid,” Martin told Ottenberg.
She continued, “I remember I read ‘Discipline and Punish’ (by Michel Foucault), which is a great book, but talking about the surveillance state — I feel like I’ve grown up with that, which is really scary and makes me very anxious about making mistakes.”
That pressure weighed on Martin and made her avoid embracing life in the public eye, she said.
“Also, I was like, ‘I don’t think we need another celebrity child in the world,’” Martin added. “ I just try to do what feels right and block out anything regarding me in the news to the best of my ability.”
As she’s gotten older, Martin said she has become less affected by the pressure of being in the spotlight.
“I’m getting a lot better at being like, ‘F— it.’ I’m not going to be scared. I just want to do what seems fun and figure my life out,” she said.
She is currently deciding what career she wants to pursue as a student at Vanderbilt University. Martin revealed in the interview that she is a law, history and society major. She’s also following her creative interests as a member of the Vanderbilt Original Cast, a cabaret theater group.
“So, the reason why I was originally like, ‘Maybe I’ll be a lawyer,’ was because I loved acting, but I was insecure and nervous, so I was like, ‘Oh my god, if I’m a lawyer, I can perform on the stage in a trial setting,’” she said. “It’s insane that I thought that.”
She remembered dreaming of being like Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon’s character in “Legally Blonde.”
Martin continued, “It’s a lot harder than it looks. I don’t know how she managed to go to law school every day as fabulous as she did. But I love history. I love true crime. I love investigating. I also think it’s fun to look at the history of law and see how you can implement it in a modern context. If I were to be a lawyer, I would just want to help people. That’s probably the biggest thing.”
