Former EastEnders star Danny Dyer has opened up about his dramatic financial transformation, revealing just how much his fortunes changed after landing a major role on a BBC show.

The actor, who became a household name as Mick Carter in the popular British soap EastEnders, previously admitted to struggling financially before joining the long-running series. In a candid interview, Dyer confessed that he was “barely able to afford petrol” and was facing serious money worries at the time.

“I was skint,” Dyer said. “I had a few jobs here and there, but nothing steady. I even questioned whether I should carry on acting. I remember putting a fiver’s worth of petrol in the car and hoping it would get me through the week.”

That all changed when he was offered the role of Mick Carter in EastEnders back in 2013. The job not only brought him national fame but also a substantial paycheck. Speaking on a recent podcast, Dyer disclosed that he was paid a six-figure salary annually during his time on the show.

“I was getting around £250,000 a year at EastEnders,” he revealed. “It completely changed my life. I was able to buy a house, support my family, and finally feel some security.”

Dyer’s honest reflection highlights the financial uncertainty that many actors face before their big break, as well as the life-changing impact of landing a major television role. Since leaving EastEnders in 2022, Dyer has continued to work on various projects, including hosting TV shows and starring in dramas.

Despite his success, he remains grounded. “Money doesn’t solve everything,” he said. “But not having to stress about every bill is a blessing I’ll never take for granted.”
